What Running A&R Taught Me About Branding

A&R is really brand development with better speakers. The lessons that build careers in music are the same ones that build brands — and most founders learn them too late.

What Running A&R Taught Me About Branding

People think A&R is about finding talent. It's not — talent is everywhere. A&R is about finding a story the market can't ignore and then protecting it through every compromise the industry will offer. Running A&R at Ethika Music — helping an apparel brand build its music arm and land a publishing deal — taught me more about branding than any marketing book I've ever read.

The story is the product

Nobody bought the record — they bought what the record meant about them. Every great artist I worked with had a sentence you could carve in stone: what they stood for, who they stood for it with. The ones who failed had great music and no sentence.

Your brand isn't your logo. It's the story a stranger can repeat about you when you're not in the room. If you can't say it in one breath, neither can they.

Consistency beats virality

I've watched a hundred artists chase the moment and disappear with it. The careers were built by the ones who showed up on schedule, sounded like themselves every time, and let the catalog compound. A brand is a promise kept repeatedly — not an impression made once.

A moment can make you known. Only a catalog makes you trusted.

Community is the only moat

Labels used to control distribution, so they controlled the audience. That era is dead. The artists with real careers built direct lines to their people — and treated ten thousand true fans like a nation, not a metric. Your community is the one asset no algorithm can take away and no competitor can copy.

Drops beat launches

Music figured this out years ago: don't do one giant launch into silence — release in chapters, let each one feed the next, keep the story alive. The best streetwear runs on the same physics. Scarcity without story is just a countdown timer. Scarcity with story is a movement.

That's why IWRITELIFE releases collections like albums and writes books like liner notes. Same discipline. Different canvas.
